Dear OBTS colleagues:

I’ve been teaching for several years now and have found that some class activities I’d like to do would be easier if I had software that facilitated it. For example, I have my students do team projects but would like to automate the way they manage their projects, the way they do peer evaluations and the how their individual grades based on their team contributions are to their teams are computed.

Does anyone know if such tools exist for class exercises and where I might find them?

Warm Greetings, OBTS Colleagues!

If you are planning to attend the OBTC Teaching Conference for Management Educators at the University of North Caroline at Asheville this year, please consider attending the Interpersonal Relations Lab (known formerly as the OB T-group) as a pre-conference professional development activity. All attendees are enthusiastically invited, but we’d like to issue a special invitation to those who are new to OBTC and to doctoral students. Participation is an excellent way to make connections with members of the OBTS community. The IR Lab experience has allowed a great many members of OBTS to develop lasting friendships with colleagues who have been supportive over the years, both professionally and personally.

What is an IR Lab? It is facilitated experiential learning, focused on the here and now, in an unstructured small group setting. The technology it uses is that of the T-group. Quality teaching depends on the ability to interact effectively with others, to have sufficient emotional awareness and competence to handle difficult interpersonal situations, and to create emotional intimacy - all of which are skills you can develop in the IR Lab.

The Interpersonal Relations Lab (known formerly as the OB T-group) has been an OBTC pre-conference activity for the past 23 years. This year's IR Lab will take place immediately prior to OBTC, from 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 2 to 3:15 pm on Wednesday June 5.

T-group technology is at the foundation of organizational development and management education. Its chief limitation lies in that it is very difficult to train persons in its effective and responsible usage. OBTS has among its members a few who are excellent T-group facilitators and are willing to provide this service to the IR Lab with no remuneration and out of dedication to their field. This year we are fortunate to have sufficient facilitators to be able to hold two groups. The facilitators will be Esther Hamilton (founder and Dean of the IR Lab), Michael London, Dale Finn, and Kenneth Pittman.

[OBTS-L Discussion List] Simulation recommendations

I was wondering what people on the list might recommend for a **very** basic business simulation to use with undergrads from a very wide range of majors (not just business). This would typically be used in introductory business classes, with students in other fields that need a "feel" for the processes of business (and maybe even with people in our summer high school programs). We would be looking for a simulation that can be used by individuals or teams. Either a free simulation or one offering a campus-wide site license at a reasonable cost would be most welcome. We really see this as something taking 1-2 hours total

I've used the GoVenture Small Business Simulation. It works well, but is expensive for mass use, and is more of a individual than team simulation. Others use CapSim and are happy with it, but they say it is expensive and pretty complex for our purposes.

In my team-based learning course, students have to fill out a simple survey about their peers that I feel is lacking in giving them a complete view of their progress. During the 15 years that I’ve been teaching teams courses, I’ve always known that most of the rich interpersonal experiences were happening in project meetings outside of class. As a result, I developed an online, 360 degree personal development survey that allows students to give each other feedback they would not normally get from each other or from me. The assessment measures 16 core competencies related to personal and professional success clustered into four main concepts: personal character, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, and leadership skills. I’ve also developed a team survey that measures shared vision, task coordination, communication, and support for innovation at the team level. I’ll be presenting both surveys this summer at OBTC.

I’ve attached a sample report for your review. You are more than welcome to use the survey in the fall if you are interested. If so, just contact me directly.

They also present an explanation as to why the meta analyses of “360 feedback” have not found compelling evidence that it alone is successful in changing the skills of the focal individuals (e.g., managers).

My co-authors and I have published a number of articles over the years demonstrating the validity of the managerial skills assessment to understanding why the performance in work units can vary drastically and how the “360 feedback process” can improve the performance of work units. All of our studies have used either industrial engineering measures of work unit performance or superior evaluations of performance.

New $500,000 prize planned for teaching

Entrepreneurs seeking to build an elite global university based on new ways of teaching online announced Monday the creation of a $500,000 prize to be awarded each year to an educator “whose innovations have led to extraordinary student learning experiences.”

The prize, described as the largest of its kind for higher education, is part of the start-up of the for-profit Minerva Project, which aims to open an institution of higher education in fall 2015.

“Effectively it is a Nobel Prize for teaching,” said Ben Nelson, Minerva’s founder and chief executive and former chief executive of the online photo company Snapfish.

The San Francisco-based company has drawn notice for raising $25 million in venture capital and recruiting Lawrence H. Summers, the former Treasury secretary and former president of Harvard University, to serve as chairman of its advisory board.

Another adviser is former U.S. senator Bob Kerrey, who recently stepped down as president of the New School in New York. The founding dean is Stephen M. Kosslyn, formerly director of the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford and dean of social sciences at Harvard.

Nelson contends that worldwide demand for admission to top universities far outstrips supply, creating an opening for a new kind of institution with rigorous academic standards but much lower tuition costs than Ivy League and comparable universities.

Minerva, Nelson said, will not have a campus but will have several residential centers in major cities around the world. Students will take live, seminar-size classes online from top faculty, he said, and move from one city to another as they progress toward a degree. “We want to create the world’s greatest educational experience,” he said.

Nelson said the Minerva Prize aims to stimulate innovation in higher education. The first award, he said, will be made in May 2014. The winner will be chosen by a newly created Minerva Academy, led by Stanford professor and Nobel winner Roger D. Kornberg.

I use the model suggested by Hogan & Warrenfeltz (2003) ** and have my students use previously validated and published questionnaires to assess themselves on the 5 interpersonal and intra personal skills identified as predictive of leadership performance. Students also get assessments from people they know in a professional context, a family/friend and a peer (student) they meet in class to assess them on these skills. Then they pick one skill they may identify as a weakness from this feedback. Then they do written assignments where they chart their progress on developing that ONE skill by using previously validated training programs for developing that skill. I don’t require them to HAVE to improve, but only that they try to improve in a systematic way. One of the best articles I've used is the one by Daniel Goleman called Leadership That Gets Results (HBR 2000). It is an assessment of Emotional Intelligence and related leadership styles. I've attached the in-class assignment that I developed to go with the article. Question 4 requires the students to use legos (which I bring to class) to build a representation of the leader they'd like to be (choosing from Goleman's 6 styles). Wasn't sure how this would go over (MBAs playing with legos??), but they loved it and talked about it for the rest of the semester!

Ecotonos is a cultural simulation that also uses the ‘tallest structure’ with a cultural twist (straws and pipe cleaners are the raw materials) – teams are color coded, the red team is an aggressive-individualist-time=money (US/anglo flavors), the blue team is analytical-high distance-low emotion-no touching (somewhat like Japan) and the green team is harmony-touching-being nice (some African, some central American flavors). The cultural element is played out by moving people from one culture to another and see what happens – typically the reds take over once sent to the green or blue groups – the blues stand back and fume, the blues have a hard time with the hugging of the greens, the huggers are sidelined when coming to the red team, etc. There is much on the web on Ecotonos and there is a list serve.

If cultural awareness is important this is a great exercise. I use colored visors (iParty) or sometimes even ask people ahead of time to come dressed in one color or another. It can be easily done in 90 minutes (30 for debrief, 20 for set up and rest for action). Great fun, great insights.

Thank you very much for providing this very useful link. I'll use it soon with another team exercise.

The beach variation I offered Tammy is based on an exercise I did long time ago--perhaps at Purdue while in graduate school. In my adaptation, in case someone out there is interested, I give every student 30 straws (better with colors, better bendable) with a few very general instructions: Build the tallest, sturdiest, and prettiest structure. The time may vary (from an hour to 20 minutes). The winning design may represent Suffolk in a national straw competition;)

Some students begin solo projects, but quickly seek alliances to pool resources; later one, smaller teams may seek even larger mergers to substantiate their projects. Some politics may ensue, as when a 3-member team convinced another (2-member team) to join them, only to dismantle competition or to use their straws as raw material. Mainly, the evolution of individual work into teams and the apparent differences between teams and groups are usually very instructive. I wonder if Tammy may use straws and sand as raw material in her project.

By the way, (1) does anyone know the developer of the original straw exercise so we may give proper credit to him/her? (2) do others have similarly anonymous exercises that we may pool for the record and perhaps offer together at an upcoming OBTC?
